Thank you to the author and YA Bound Book Tours for providing me with an e-copy of Secrets of Artemis by C. K. Brooke, the first book in the Teen Goddess series in exchange for an honest review.
Well, I must preface this: this book was not what I was expecting at all. Based on what I had previously read by the author, I expected some kind of High Fantasy feel to the mythology, perhaps a bit of a retelling or well, I don’t really know, but certainly not this.
Now, I really liked the other book (The Duchess Quest) which I reviewed by this author and gave it the same writing, but may I just say how much I love the writing style in this particular book, which the other book didn’t have; it is really quite beautiful and I wasn’t expecting it at all.
I love the intricate weavings of more obscure Greek Mythology, I love the relationships between the characters and Artemis’ maternal instincts are golden. I would love to see more of the relationship between Artemis and Apollo- it seems like that would be really, really interesting. I did feel like we were missing some everyday things or something along those lines to get to know the characters more (perhaps if the pace of the book was slightly slower) and whilst I really liked Orion, I didn’t connect with him and fall in love with him nearly as much as I had hoped.
I will say that a certain scene with the cyclopes was definitely my favourite; I absolutely loved it. In conclusion, I would recommend this book to those people who love Greek mythology, especially takes you might not yet have heard or contemplated, fast-paced reads with a bit of heartbreak and a lot of reasonably clean romance.
